Set in a world where magic is common, peace is unbroken, and an age of enlightenment is at its peak, a small castle-town in a backwater province will become the centre of an ancient, un-ended war. Discovering the forces at play will only be half the battle.
The story follows Rowan, a natural fleet-foot as swift as the wind. His father, Ehlon, is Captain of the Guard and has high expectations for his only son. When it comes time for Rowan to travel to the Academy to complete his training, dark clouds are cast over their province. Strange beasts attack by night. Spies are discovered lurking. A betrayal reveals a long-overlooked threat. Suddenly, an ancient and unfinished war is upon them. Will Rowan live up to his father’s expectations and save their homeland? Will it matter at all if he does? He will find there are some things he cannot outrun.
